City of Detroit Announces Detroit Techno Week (May 18-25)

Mayor Mary Sheffield Recognizes 20th Anniversary of Electronic Music Festival

The City of Detroit has officially proclaimed May 18-25, 2026 as Detroit Techno Week, recognizing Movement Music Festival and the weeklong spirit of music, culture, and community that surrounds the festival throughout Detroit.

The proclamation was signed by Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield ahead of Movement’s 20th anniversary edition under Paxahau’s stewardship, taking place Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-25, at Hart Plaza on Detroit’s iconic riverfront.

Movement weekend brings an estimated $20 million in economic activity to the city, welcoming approximately 30,000 music fans from around the world each year, celebrating the city’s revolutionary legacy as the birthplace of Techno.

In keeping with its tradition of celebrating Detroit’s impact on the culture, the festival has booked a panoply of the city’s most adroit talent, including the iconic DJ, producer, and House Your Life founder DJ Minx; breakout hip-hop star PEEZY; Ghostly International co-founder Matthew Dear as Audion (Live), powerhouse trio and Defected Records artists Dames Brown; enigmatic electronic music producer Terrence Dixon (Live); Detroit poet laureate jessica Care moore (who will be doing a short spoken word performance ahead of Carl Craig’s 69 set); plus: Tammy Lakkis, DJ Godfather, Kyle Hall b2b Byron the Aquarius, JMT, Salar Ansari, Whodat, Rimarkable, KESSWA, Disco Jockey George, and many more.

Music fans from across the globe will once again make the pilgrimage to Detroit, the birthplace of Techno, and be treated to three days of diverse curation on Memorial Day Weekend (May 23-25, 2026) inside Hart Plaza at downtown Detroit’s iconic riverfront. Since 2006, Paxahau has cultivated Movement into a globally acclaimed electronic music festival, honoring Detroit’s revolutionary legacy while pushing the culture forward through highly intentional programming that bridges seasoned legends with the rising stars shaping the genre’s future.

In addition to the on-site music programming, the festival will feature multiple art installations; including Universal Sound Systems, a large-scale mural installation on-site by Detroit artist and designer Tony Whlgn, in collaboration with 1XRUN. “The mural is a reflection of Detroit Techno as a living frequency—built in basements, broadcast through airwaves, and carried across generations into a global language of sound,” said Tony.

“Rooted in movement and repetition, the mural echoes the dance floor as a site of connection, where time dissolves and community forms through vibration. Playful and immersive, it imagines Detroit as both the origin and a transmitter that continuously shapes how the world listens, gathers, and moves. This piece stands as both tribute and infrastructure: a recognition that sound here builds worlds.” Universal Sound Systems is located at the Pyramid Amphitheater (near the Pyramid Stage).

The festival will also host the Respect the Architects, curated by Underground Music Academy (UMA), in partnership with Detroit Techno Foundation. The exhibits, located in the Underground Amphitheatre (near the Underground Stage) recognizes and celebrates some of Detroit electronic music community’s most impactful and unsung heroes, including Santonio Echols, Delano Smith, Mike “Mad Mike” Banks of Underground Resistance, Mike Huckaby, Zana Smith, K-Hand, Ron Murphy, James Pennington, Ken Collier and many more.

The festival’s stages for 2026 include Movement Stage, Waterfront Stage presented by JARS, Stargate Stage, Underground Stage, Pyramid Stage, and Detroit Stage.
