“SHADOWWORKING” PT. 1 SPIRITUALS, EP Release & Exhibition at MOCAD

Curator Kevin Bernard Moultrie Daye presents SPIRITUALS, which opens at the MOCAD as a two-part exploration of folk rituals and juxtaposed beats on Friday, September 30th. KBMD is an architectural designer, teacher, theorist, and visual artist featured in numerous outlets like AFROPUNK, Paste, Domus, WIRED, and KQED.

The Opening and debut evening on Friday, September 29th will include performances from Zelooperz, HiTech, and sculptor Hamzat Raheem.

SHADOWWORKING the Exhibition

KBMD integrates the black cultural experience with ritual folklore. The artist demonstrates Hoodoo tectonics by creating ancestral masks from the University of Michigan utilizing technology such as 3D printers and robotics. Guests will explore recreated Detroit neighborhoods like Black Bottom highlighted by ultraviolet light. KBMD’s otherworldly exploration delicately balances the ancestral plane with the present. Shadowworking is a keen observation that honors community and local neighborhoods’ pre-gentrification. This pensive reimagining notes the transcendence of humanity over artifacts over time.

SHADOWWORKING the EP

SPIRITUALS is thoughtful, conscious, and provocative. Listeners are forced to challenge their complacency. This EP painstakingly holds space for the audience to come to their full senses. It uncovers grief, anger, fear, and hostility and encourages us to accept ourselves as a whole.

Shadow work requires us to witness the worst parts of ourselves while living in between. If you are a fan of The White Stripes, then this EP is for you. KBMD provides a musical element to the exhibition under his stage name SPIRTUALS. This musical exploration of “Diasporic Beat Science” may best be described as genre-bending.

The 5 track EP is rooted in Detroit musical culture and heavily influenced by hip-hop and rock. Prepare to journey into the depths of your soul and become acquainted with the darkness of your shadow.
