ZERO: Zach Thompson Solo Exhibition (07.17-08.22)

Thompson returns for his second solo exhibition at PLAYGROUND DETROIT

Zach Thompson’s latest series of work exhibited in ZERO embraces abstraction as a visual language for expressing the complexity of life. Approaching painting as both an intuitive and spiritual practice, he treats the canvas as a space for discovery; a place where meaning emerges through gesture, repetition, and chance. His paintings reflect an ongoing search for freedom within the act of creation, allowing instinct and emotions to guide the development of each composition.

As a concept, ZERO embodies the feeling of freedom that emerges through exploration, experimentation, and the acceptance of uncertainty. It invites us to engage with abstract ideas in pursuit of deeper understanding. ZERO is perhaps the most paradoxical number: it exists at a crossroads between language, mathematics, and form.

A symbol of both absence and infinite possibility, present everywhere and nowhere at once, ZERO shapes how we measure value, meaning, and potential. In a society that primarily assigns worth through dollar signs, a string of zeros can separate commercial success from perceived failure.

I Feel It All The Time, Oil on canvas, 36 x 48 x 1.5 inches 2026

To be a “ZERO” in society is often to be viewed as insignificant or without value. In the context of his exhibition, Thompson reclaims the term- instead, wearing it with pride as a symbol of resilience, self-determination, and limitless potential. Expressive, energetic, and intuitive, repeated gestures overlap and accumulate to form expansive fields of line, color, and movement in a new series of abstract paintings.

Through this process, Thompson continues to explore what it means to be alive in an era where the boundaries between the physical and virtual increasingly blur. His work reflects the full spectrum of human experience, embracing moments of joy, vulnerability, acceptance, and wonder.
