LINDSAY SPLICHAL

MULTI-DISCIPLINARY

Lindsay Splichal constructs space responsive and site specific architectural print through lenses of printmaking, sculpture, and installation. The work responds to architecture with an interest in adaptation; how the body, self and objects acclimate to spaces. Familiar forms, flexible in meaning evoke conversational overlap between the two-dimensional multiple and the three-dimensional object. Involving repetition, environments of obsessive arrangement create a presence of order and specificity. Splichal uses the materiality of the work to intimately engage viewers to further explore the formal aesthetics and technical approaches intermixed throughout the body of work. She is a recipient of the PLAYGROUND DETROIT 20/20 Emerging Artists Fellowship award in 2020.

“BUILDING MATERIALS” is a site-specific exhibition by Lindsay Splichal that explores printmaking, sculpture, and installation, presented during Detroit Month of Design by PLAYGROUND DETROIT. The work employs construction materials such as foam, paint, cement, asphalt felt, OSB, drywall, and acrylic, as well as Xerox transfers on paper, banner prints, and relief prints. It exposes an interplay between architecture, space, and the vehicles of sculpture and print, engaging the overlap between the two-dimensional multiple and the three-dimensional object.

In this new body of work, Splichal creates space-responsive print monotypes explored through sculptural and print installation, alongside scalable, low-cost, high-labor takeaways. The exhibition both requires and responds to space, allowing the space itself to extend the work.
