Season Art Fair 2026

PLAYGROUND DETROIT presents Zahra Almajidi at Season Fair as an extension of her debut solo exhibition on view during Detroit Month of Design 2026.

On view during Detroit Month of Design by PLAYGROUND DETROIT, Casting The Net is Zahra Almajidi’s debut solo exhibition that flows between the spaces of constructed memory and contradictory materiality. Employing both analog and digital fabrication methods, the fine artist and metalsmith’s exhibition utilizes jewelry, digital prints, and design objects to envision a future that asks: How does one build upon the craft and design traditions of their ancestors to forge a connection to their displaced culture?

This question manifests into a colorful figurative and ornamental visual language that transforms space, adorned with design objects inspired by the imagery in the Marsh Arab rugs and other culturally specific craft objects, into a site of confrontation. The exhibition functions as a speculative act of world-building—rather than focusing on a past that has been systematically erased, Casting The Net insists on projecting into a future that both references and expands upon this dying craft and material culture. 

Season Contemporary is a Detroit-based nonprofit art fair and cultural initiative focused on building market infrastructure for artists, galleries, and cultural workers. Founded and directed by Amani Olu, Season approaches cultural development through the demand side of the art ecosystem — expanding opportunities for sales, visibility, and professional growth.

Season Fair returns to the Shepherd from September 11–13, 2026, for its second edition, bringing together eleven exhibitors from Detroit, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Washington, D.C., and Aalborg, Denmark. The fair’s 2026 edition introduces Form, a new section dedicated to sculpture and object-based practices, expanding Season’s curatorial scope.

Detroit has long produced influential artists, galleries, and cultural institutions, yet opportunities for sustained exchange with collectors and exhibitors beyond the city have remained limited. Season was created to help fill that gap: offering a focused, highly curated environment where regional, national, and international voices meet in direct and sustained exchange.

Across painting, sculpture, textiles, and installation, the artists participating in Season ask a common question: How do we build meaningful lives amid change? Their works explore migration and intimacy, craft traditions and domestic life, aspiration and belonging — transforming everyday materials and personal histories into new forms of connection, and offering a portrait of contemporary life that is at once deeply personal and broadly shared.

Form brings together galleries presenting sculpture and object-based practices — artists who transform domestic materials, inherited craft traditions, and architectural forms into objects that invite reflection and discovery.

Held within the Shepherd, the restored Romanesque church and cultural campus on Detroit’s east side, Season offers an experience shaped by the building’s architecture and the ambition of the work. The fair’s second edition builds on the momentum of its inaugural year while continuing to ask a larger question: What does a fair look like when it’s built to serve a city whose creative output has long outpaced its collecting infrastructure?
