Renowned Detroit Photographer Cyrus Tetteh Shatters Stereotypes with “Only in Detroit” Photo Book

In a city known for its rich history, culture, and resilience, Detroit-based photographer Cyrus Tetteh has released a groundbreaking photo book titled, Only in Detroit.” This captivating visual journey offers an exclusive glimpse into some of the Motor City’s most iconic moments and celebrated figures from 2017 to 2022.

Cyrus Tetteh’s lens unveils the remarkable moments and people that make Detroit one of a kind. “Only in Detroit” is a testament to the indomitable spirit of Detroit and its enduring legacy. It challenges the prevailing stereotypes and misconceptions about Detroit, shedding light on the vibrant and dynamic spirit of the city and its people.

“It’s easy for someone from the outside looking in to make blind comments, but Detroit is still a foundational pillar to this country’s past, present, and future successes,” said Tetteh.

The 96-paged book features an array of exclusive, never-before-seen photographs, including intimate shots from the funeral of Motown Legend Aretha Franklin, rare glimpses of billionaire Mike Bloomberg during his 2018 visit to Detroit, heartwarming moments with Mary Wilson of the Supremes at the Brewster Projects where she grew up, and President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ visits to Detroit.

Cyrus Tetteh’s inspiration for “Only in Detroit” stems from his desire to counteract the negative narrative that has plagued the city for years. He aims to demonstrate that Detroit is not defined solely by its challenges but by its resilience, creativity, and moments of triumph. All photographs in the book were taken within the city limits of Detroit, emphasizing its authenticity and showcasing the city’s true character.

“Any time I’d travel around the country and tell people I’m from Detroit, they’d always ask me questions about bankruptcy, corruption, or some form of negativity,” said Tetteh. “To be able to showcase the positives of Detroit and tell the visual narrative that Detroit can’t be judged by its past feels amazing.”

Well known Detroit author and journalist Aaron Foley provides the foreword for “Only in Detroit”. His unique perspective and deep connection to the city further enhances the book’s narrative, offering a compelling context for the photographs.

“Only in Detroit” has already garnered significant attention and accolades within the community. The release of the book follows Tetteh’s month-long solo exhibit in partnership with Design Core Detroit and The Carr Center.
