Marlo Broughton (born 1987) known professionally as MARLOBRO, is an American pop artist and designer. Who got his start by working with his cousin and founder of Detroit VS Everybody by Tommey Walker and linking up with members of Finally Famous which ultimately lead to working on mixtape artworks and branding for Big Sean’s early indie career.
He now focuses on his fine art practice to create acrylic paintings, as well as large scale murals. He frequently collaborates with brands and organizations for commercial projects, predominantly on promotional materials, clothing, music production and branding. As his inclusion in private collections grows, Broughton has exhibited in galleries and featured outdoors in local and international environments including 1XRUN, PLAYGROUND DETROIT, Murals in the Market Festival, SCOPE Miami Beach,Saatchi Art, and SINGULAR ART. He lives and works in Detroit, Michigan.
“LONG DAYS NO DREAMS,” Marlo Broughton’s exhibition presented at PLAYGROUND DETROIT on February 3, confronts the ongoing struggle for freedom and equal rights for people of color through a series of bold, graphic portraits. Merging reimagined historical imagery with striking black-and-white compositions punctuated by vivid color, Broughton bridges past and present to expose how the realities of the Civil Rights Movement continue to shape contemporary life. His work challenges viewers to move beyond simplified narratives and instead engage with the nuance, memory, and lived experience embedded within each figure’s unflinching gaze. Calling for a collective awakening, the exhibition urges audiences to rethink inherited narratives, recognize systemic forces that persist today, and reclaim power in shaping the future.
