PLAYGROUND DETROIT’s first exhibition of 2025, Contours, is Dustin Cook’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, opening to the public on Saturday, January 18th at PLAYGROUND DETROIT from 6-9PM.
The shaped canvases in Contours redefine the traditional canvas, creating abstract pieces that are as much about the physical form as they are about the interplay of color and texture. Dustin Cook’s abstract paintings invite the viewer to find their own meaning within the interplay of color and form.
Color plays a pivotal role in my work, acting as a conduit for expressing the rich and varied emotional qualities found in nature and the urban environment. I employ a vibrant palette that harmonizes contrasting hues, creating a sense of harmony and tension within the canvas.
By harnessing the power of color, I aim to evoke the essence of different atmospheres, whether it be the tranquil serenity of a flowing river or the pulsating energy of a bustling cityscape.”

Last September, Cook faced the heartbreak of an abrupt exhibit cancellation— a moment that felt like “the culmination of months of work and anticipation had slipped through my hands. What could have been a dead end, instead became a turning point thanks to an abundant amount of support from the people around me, and especially the team at PLAYGROUND DETROIT,” says the artist.

“I’m incredibly grateful for their offer to find a future date to host this show. Their unwavering support has been a cornerstone of my career—from showcasing my earliest works to helping them find their way into private collections and collaborating on projects that have shaped me as an artist. It feels fitting to see this show come together in Detroit.
Hosting “Contours” in my hometown feels like a full-circle moment—a celebration of resilience, community, and creativity in the city that’s shaped me. I can’t wait to share this journey and the stories within the series with all of you.”

Dustin Cook (b.1995) is an artist living and working in Detroit, Michigan. As an abstract artist, his work is a vibrant exploration of color, energy, and the interplay between form and atmosphere. My artistic process is driven by a playful and intuitive approach. Using bold, clean lines and geometric precision, I create compositions that dance with rhythmic vitality, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in a world of dynamic abstraction.
